Public Safety Tax – What It Means for Reeds Spring
You may have noticed “Vote Public Safety Tax – April 7” signs appearing around Reeds Spring. Many residents have asked what this tax is and why it’s being proposed, so we’d like to share a little information.
The Public Safety Tax is a restricted revenue, which means the funds collected can only be used to support the Reeds Spring Police Department. By design, this ensures the money goes directly toward public safety in our community.
Over the past several years, calls for service have increased dramatically. To keep up with this growing demand, the department needs to add an additional part-time officer. Our officers currently earn salaries on the lower end compared with other departments in Stone County, and they do not have a retirement plan. Despite this, they continue to show remarkable dedication and commitment to serving the people of Reeds Spring.
The proposed revenue will not cover every need, but it would provide an important starting point to help strengthen public safety services.
It’s also important to know that the City has not increased property taxes in many years, while inflation continues to reduce the purchasing power of our existing revenue sources. Because of this, the City must explore other ways to fund essential services.
By choosing a restricted tax, residents can feel confident knowing exactly where the funds will be used — supporting the safety and protection of our community.
We encourage everyone to stay informed and participate in the upcoming vote on April 7.
